Hello all! Hope you all are doing well and are baking up a storm for the holidays! My parents have two HUGE orange trees. As of about two weeks ago, the branches start drooping more and more because of all the ripe oranges! So, I decided to make CANDIED ORANGE PEELS, they were delicious, but quite "gourmet" tasting.
So if you're looking for a simple, inexpensive, yet impressive recipe, give this one a try!

Ingredients:
- 4 large oranges, 1/4 inch of top and bottom cut off
- 2 cups sugar, divided
- 1 cups water
Directions:
- Cut peel on each orange into 4 vertical segments. Remove each segment(including white pith) in 1 piece. Cut into 1/4-inch-wide strips. Cook in large pot of boiling water 15 minutes; drain, rinse, anddrain again.
- Bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to boil in medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add peel. Returnto boil. Reduce heat; simmer until peel is very soft, about 45 minutes.Drain.
- Toss peel and 1 cup sugar on rimmed baking sheet,separating strips. Lift peel from sugar; transfer tosheet of foil. Let stand until coating is dry, 1 to 2 days.DO AHEAD Wrap andfreeze up to 2 months.

1. Cook in large pot of boiling water for 15 minutes, rinse, and repeat.
(This takes any bitterness out of the orange peels.)

2. Simmer in sugar/water mixture for 45 minutes.

3. Let the orange peels dry before coating them in sugar.

4. Enjoy your home-made gourmet candy!

I definitely agree with the above -- very different from the cookies and fudge regular desserts, and perfect for someone who really likes citrus. And unless I'm mistaken, one could also then use the candied peel as decoration for something else... or in cupcakes... oh the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteI'm a little confused on your directions do I boil them 2x and is the sugar put on after 2 days your pics and recipe don't coincide. Sorry really not picky just want to get them right.They look yummy. Can't wait to try.
